Reading Strategy: Skimming

Introduction to Skimming:

We use different reading strategies when reading for different purposes. Skimming is a reading strategy you will use when you need to identify the gist of a text quickly. For example, when you do research, you need to read a lot of materials within a limited amount of time. Skimming helps you to get an idea of whether a particular article may be of interest in your research.

Techniques of Skimming:

If you read a longer text, you may read the first and last paragraph of it. You might want to quickly look at the title, subtitles, headings or other organizers to get an idea of the main idea of the text. If you read a shorter text, consider reading the first and the last sentence of a paragraph.
