Batik Making

Batik is one of Java's famous and highly developed art traditions. It means "wax written" and in short it is a way of decorating cloth by covering part of it with a coat of wax and then dyeing the cloth.

The waxed area keeps its original colour and when the wax is removed the contrast between the dyed and undyed area makes the pattern. The wax sometimes cracks to let small quantities of dye through, adding a hair like pattern to the design. This is a special characteristic of most batik work.

After 2 sessions of 3-4 hours of work and overpowering smell of melted wax, our friends are proud to share with us their fruit of labour!
